Research Interests

Key research interests include:

  • Addiction and comorbid mental illness;
  • Substance abuse in adolescents and youth;
  • The neuroscience of addiction.

Research Projects

The research projects I am currently working on fall under the neurobiology/neurogenetics, epidemiological modelling and policy and ethical analysis streams of the fellowship's work.

Epidemiological Modelling projects I am working on include:

  • Comorbid mental illness in smokers (with Wayne Hall, Coral Gartner and NDARC collaborators):
    • Age trends in the prevalence of comorbid mental illness in Australian smokers; and
    • Changes in the prevalence of comorbid mental illness in Australian smokers over the last decade.

*Both are analyses of the 1997 and 2007 National Surveys of Mental Health and Well-Being.

  • Drivers of burden of disease in young Australians (with Wayne Hall, Theo Vos and George Patton):

A secondary analysis of the Australian Burden of Disease study looking at the leading causes of death and disability in adolescents and young adults.

  • Socioeconomic status and parental smoking (with Coral Gartner): This study examines the association between parental smoking (a proxy for passive smoking) and socioeconomic status in 2001, 2005 and 2008 Australian National Health Surveys.
  • Schizophrenia and psychosis.

Neurobiology and Genetics of Addiction projects include:

  • A review of the genetics and neuroscience of alcohol dependence.

Policy and ethical analysis projects include:

  • A review of the public health utility of predictive genomic medicine (with Wayne Hall and Kate Morley).
